The Validity of the Calculation of Standard Urea Clearances from Low Urine Volumes.

چکیده
The "standard urea clearance" is calculated upon the assumption that the urea excretion will vary with the square root of the urine volume, when the latter is below the augmentation limit of about two milliliters per minute. The result of the calculation gives the milliliters of blood which would be cleared were the urine volume one milliliter per minute, if the square root rule were strictly true. M6ller, McIntosh and Van Slyke (1) derived the equation for computing the standard urea clearance as follows: " If C is the observed blood urea clearance (the cubic centimeters of blood, the urea of which is excreted in one minute) with any urine volume output, V, below the augmentation limit, then with the standard urine volume, V8., the corresponding standard clearance, C8, may be calculated by the square root rule as:

Urea Excretion at Low Urine Volumes. the Calculation of "minimal" Urea Clearances.
In a previous paper (1), it was shown that the calculation of standard urea clearances from urine volumes of less than about 0.35 ml. per minute gives results which are considerably too low. It was found that the lower the urine volume is, the greater the error becomes, as the calculated standard clearance falls lower and lower. This was demonstrated in 173 adults, including patients with toxem...
متن کاملThe secretion of urine by dehydrated and normal infants.
High blood ureas have been found in untreated cases (Schloss, 1918; Bessau, Rosenbaum and Leichtentritt, 1922; Cohen, Miller and Kramer, 1933), and Schloss considered that haemoconcentration was not enough to account for this finding. By means of the phenolsulphonphthalein test and Ambard's coefficient of urea excretion he showed that the function of the kidney was impaired in a group of infant...
متن کاملNomograms for calculation of urea clearance.
Two nomograms are given for use in calculating standard, C3, or maximum, Cm, urea clearance. The first nomogram calculates the urine flow rate, f, from the urine collection time and volume data. With the second nomogram, values of f and urea nitrogen concentrations in blood serum (or plasma) and urine are used to calculate either C3 or Cm, according to the value of f. There is no intermediate c...
متن کاملThe Relation of High and Low Urea Clearances to the Inulin and Creatinine Clearances in Children with the Nephrotic Syndrome.
During the past 6 years we have observed that, in children with the nephrotic syndrome, the urea clearance is not infrequently increased for periods of 1 or more months to 140 per cent or more of the average clearance of normal children of similar age and size. The phenomenon has occurred with the same frequency in both sexes. In a group of 33 nephrotic children all less than 10 years of age wh...
متن کاملA Comparison of the Creatinine and Urea Clearance Tests of Kidney Function.
The urea clearance test developed by M6ller, McIntosh and Van Slyke (1) has one disadvantage, namely, that maximum and standard clearances are only comparable by refer.ence to the average normal value for each or by multiplying the standard clearance by a constant. In addition the standard clearance, involving the square root of the urine volume, is difficult to interpret. The creatinine cleara...
